NSW man arrested after tyres slashed on 42 cars

A man has been arrested and charged after more than forty vehicles’ tyres were slashed in the centre of Inverell, in NSW's New England region on Friday.

In the early hours of Friday morning, police were alerted to a man who was reportedly acting suspiciously in and around the Inverell CBD.

Officers spoke to the man and after searching him he was allowed to leave.

He was again found by police an hour later and this time in possession of a backpack which was searched and a pair of scissors were allegedly located and seized.

The man was again allowed to leave pending further inquiries and investigators reviewed CCTV footage from recent days.

In all 42 vehicles suffered tyre damage, some with all four tyres punctured, consistent with being pierced with a sharp object.

Shortly before midday Saturday, detectives arrested the 34-year-old man.

He was taken to Inverell Police Station and subsequently charged with 42 counts of malicious damage.

The man was refused bail to appear at Inverell Local Court later today.
