NSW man charged after 700kg of copper seized

A man will appear in court later this month after 700kg of copper was seized in the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command this morning, NSW Police say.

About 1.30am today, police were patrolling an industrial area around Investigator Drive, Unanderra, when they saw a man crouched down behind a car.

Police spoke to the 43-year-old man before searching the vehicle where they located 700kg of copper, alleged to have been stolen.

The copper has been seized for forensic examination.

The Hammondville man was arrested at the scene and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with stealing, two counts of trespass, two counts of malicious damage, and drive unregistered vehicle.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Port Kembla Local Court on 20 July 2016.
