NSW Man Charged over ICE seizure, TAS

A 32 year old New South Wales man has been charged with trafficking and unlawfully importing a controlled substance following the seizure of ICE worth more than $500,000 yesterday, Tasmania Police say.

On Sunday 7 May 2017, members of Tasmania Police, along with the Drug Dog Detection Handler Unit attended the Hobart International Airport to conduct routine passenger screening for people disembarking from domestic flights.

At approximately 7:55am, police observed patrons to disembark from a flight arriving from Sydney and walk to the Hobart Airport baggage collection.

Passengers were subjected to a screening by the Drug Detection Dog in the presence of two police officers.  The Drug Detection Dog has given a positive indication on a 32 year-old male passenger from New South Wales.

A subsequent search detected the man in possession of a package concealed in his underwear. A later examination of this package revealed it to be 522 grams of what police believe to be the drug methamphetamine (commonly known as ‘ICE’).

Police have charged the man with one count of Unlawfully Importing a Controlled Substance and one count of Trafficking in a controlled substance.

The man appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court this morning and was remanded in custody.
