NSW man threatens fire-fighters with axe as house burns

A man has been arrested on Sydney’s Northern Beaches after a confrontation with fire-fighters while his house burnt down, NSW Police say.

Emergency services were called to a house on fire in Alexander Road at Whale Beach shortly after 2am today tomorrow.

Fire-fighters from Fire & Rescue NSW arrived and began to hose the burning building, but were allegedly confronted by the resident who was armed with an axe.

Fire-fighters backed off and called for assistance.

Police from Northern Beaches Local Area Command attended the scene and arrested the man a short time later.

The man was taken to Chatswood Police Station where he is assisting police with their inquiries.

Despite renewed efforts, the weatherboard house was destroyed.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and a crime scene has been established.

The scene will be examined in daylight.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
