NSW Police donation to boost cycling numbers at Westmead

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead welcomed a donation of five decommissioned bicycles from the NSW Police fleet today (Tuesday 8 May 2018), encouraging staff to consider active transport for their commute., NSW Police say

The five Hillbrick Firetail bicycles will provide its Bicycle User Group (BUG) with the resources to encourage more people to get out of their car and onto a bike.

Janett Clarkson from the BUG said they were thrilled that NSW Police had offered them the state-of-the-art bikes once they were retired from their fleet.

"The Westmead precinct, and surrounds, is a busy place with a lot of traffic congestion. This incredibly generous donation lets interested staff try cycling to work, as well as allowing us to facilitate training on how to safely ride on the roads and use one of the many cycle ways connected to the City of Parramatta area," Ms Clarkson said.

Commander of NSW Police Operational Safety and Skills, Detective Superintendent Mark Hiron, said the bicycles would be in good hands at the hospital.

"This donation is part of an ongoing relationship with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead," he said.

"It is fantastic to know our bicycles will get a second lifecycle at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

"We are encouraged that this donation will see more people getting on their bicycle, putting on a helmet, and going for a ride. The best ride is a safe ride, so the BUG’s investment in safety training, health and fitness is a project we are very happy to support."
