NSW Police engage with Indigenous communities amid pandemic

The state's acting Western Region Commander today visited the regional town of Wilcannia to meet with locals and discuss their concerns amid the threat of COVID-19 pandemic.

This is part of a plan for NSW Police to communicate with major Indigenous communities across the state.

Indigenous Australians are at a higher risk from the virus and, as a result, police would like to reassure communities that they are at the forefront of measures from not only NSW Police but other government agencies, including NSW Health and Aboriginal Affairs.

As part of the engagement, Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna APM, Western Region Commander, visited Wilcannia today to join community consultation.

During the meeting, local community members agreed to develop local solutions to assist in protecting the community.

Mr McKenna and local officers will also meet with community members from Toomelah in coming days.
