NSW police operation concludes following Australia Day 2019 celebrations

The NSW Police Force is pleased with the behaviour of crowds joining in Australia Day events across Sydney and regional areas.

Operation Australia Day 2019 was launched today (Saturday 26 January 2019), involving general duties officers, assisted by specialist police, to ensure a safe and secure environment for the community.

During the high-visibility policing operation, 26 people were arrested and charged for a range of offences including affray, PCA, possess prohibited drugs and supply prohibited drugs.

Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb APM, said the majority of people were well-behaved and enjoyed their celebrations safely and responsibly.

"Considering the hot weather and significant crowds enjoying festivities today, the vast majority celebrated safely, which made for a family-friendly day," Assistant Commissioner Webb said.

"The main issue for police was anti-social and dangerous behaviour and officers did respond to several brawls across the state, including the Central Coast, Sydney's south and Northern Beaches, however, swift and early action ensured these issues did not ruin the day for everyone else.

"As celebrations continue this evening and over the long weekend, make sure you look out for your friends and if you're having a drink – do so in moderation," Assistant Commissioner Webb.

Marine safety was another focus of the operation, with a number of breath tests, drug tests and licensing inspections conducted.

Of note, just before 7pm, police from the Marine Area Command and Public Order and Riot Squad boarded a licensed vessel in Sydney Harbour.

Officers allegedly located drugs and the vessel was directed to Rose Bay Wharf.

The passengers disembarked and were screened with the assistance of a drug detection dog and officers from Operations Support Group.

A search of the vessel found numerous items, believed to be cocaine, methylamphetamine, and various tablets. They have been seized for forensic examination.

No arrests or charges have been made at this stage.

Inquiries are continuing.
