NSW police prepare for a touchdown - NAIDOC Week Touch Football Tournament

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District are swapping their boots for sneakers, as they begin training for the annual NAIDOC week Touch Football Championship, NSW Police say.

NAIDOC week commences on Sunday 8 July 2018 and concludes on Sunday 15 July 2018, celebrating Aboriginal culture, history and achievement.

The Touch Football Championship, now in its fourth year, involves teams from the Port Stephens Aboriginal Community, Williamtown Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Port Stephens Council and police.

Now, for the first time, teams from the Port Stephens Education Department will also be joining the competition.

Chief Inspector Tony Townsend said the tournament has been a great success for the past three years.

"The touch football competition has become entrenched in the Port Stephens NAIDOC week celebrations, and the community spirit just continues to grow.

"This year over 100 people will compete in the tournament to win the championship trophy.

"Our officers work tirelessly to protect and serve the public every day, and this is just one example of how we as a community are continuing to kick goals on and off the field."

The friendly round-robin competition will kick-off at 9am on Thursday 12 July 2018 at Boyd Oval Medowie, and conclude with an official presentation at 3pm.

Let the games begin!
