NSW police warn of drink driving dangers following start of Operation Drink Drive II

A woman has had her licence confiscated after allegedly returning a breath analysis reading of 0.269 on the first day of Operation Drink Drive II, NSW Police say.

The three-day operation targets impaired drivers and other traffic offences.

A 45-year-old woman was pulled over on the M1 at Cataract for a random breath test about 1.30pm yesterday (Friday 3 November 2017).

The woman, from Newtown, allegedly returned a positive reading and was arrested. She was submitted to a breath analysis test at Corrimal Police Station which returned a reading of 0.269.

The woman was charged with high-range drink driving and her licence was confiscated. She is due to appear before Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 5 December 2017.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander’s Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said 19 people had been charged with drink driving offences on the first day of the operation.

"It’s disappointing to see people charged with drink-driving offences during this period of wet weather," he said.

"This is even more frightening when you consider police also issued 988 infringement notices for speeding.

"Drivers are still taking risks; which is unacceptable and putting other people’s lives in danger. People should organise another way home if they plan to consume alcohol or they will be in the police’s sights.

"Motorists are urged to drive to the prevailing weather conditions and always obey the road rules."

Incidents of note during the first day of Operation Drink Drive II:

A man was charged after allegedly failing to stop for a random breath test on the Great Western Highway, Leura. About 9.20pm police will allege the 27-year-old man was directed into the random breath test site but he sped off. The man was eventually pulled over and breath tested which returned a positive reading. He was arrested and charged with mid-range drink driving and fail to stop for RBT. The man’s licence was suspended and he is due to appear before Katoomba Local Court on Monday 4 December 2017.

A 19-year-old male provisional driver was allegedly detected travelling nearly 25km/h over the speed limit on Sussex Inlet Road, Sussex Inlet, about 12.45am. A police pursuit was initiated and the man was arrested on Springs Road. He was given a roadside breath test breath test which returned a positive result. He was charged with Skye’s Law, mid-range drink driving, speed dangerous and drive unregistered vehicle.

A 71-year-old man was stopped at an RBT side on the Princes Highway, Bodalla, about 5.00pm. Police requested the man, from Huskisson, produce his driver’s licence. The man allegedly told police that he did not hold one. Police will allege the man had never held a licence and was currently disqualified from obtaining a licence until May 2019. He was issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice to appear at Moruya Local Court on the Friday 8 December 2017.
