NSW SES Boosts Flood Readiness With Key Resources

One of the key tools supporting communities are community caches, strategically placed storage sites stocked with vital flood preparedness equipment. There are currently 12 caches located across the Riverina and surrounding areas.

NSW SES Southern Deputy Zone Commander, Brett Koschel, said the caches make it easier for communities to prepare when severe weather is on the way.

"When floodwaters rise, every minute counts," Deputy Commander Koschel said.

"By having multiple cache sites, residents can quickly collect supplies from the location closest to them, whether that's the Wagga SES Unit, North Wagga or Uranquinty. It's a simple way to help people act sooner and stay prepared."

These caches focus on the essentials. Inside are sandbags, shovels, tarps and first aid kits, equipment designed to help residents protect their homes and stay safe. Supplies are unlocked by trusted local community groups when floods and severe weather is forecast, ensuring people can get what they need when it matters most.

The initiative has been particularly valuable for flood-prone communities like North Wagga and Moulamein, where isolation is a regular risk.

"Moulamein and North Wagga residents know the impacts of flooding. Having caches in place means residents don't have to wait for outside help, they can start preparing immediately," Deputy Commander Koschel said.

Spanning more than 170,000 square kilometres, the NSW SES Southern Zone covers many small and remote towns that face similar risks. Community caches are one part of a broader strategy to strengthen resilience across the region.

"We continuously restock the caches so that residents have what they need, when they need it most," Deputy Commander Koschel said.

"They give people the chance to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their neighbours."
