More than 70 volunteers from across Southwest Sydney including Camden, Campbelltown and Liverpool Units came together at Glenfield Scout Park on Saturday 6 September to take part in a series of realistic exercises designed to simulate real emergency scenarios.
NSW SES Acting Metro Zone Commander Andrew Dadley said the event provides invaluable hands-on experience for new volunteers.
"It allows them to practise and refine critical skills in a fun, yet challenging environment, so they're ready to respond effectively when real emergencies strike," Superintendent Dadley said.
"The various challenges throughout the day not only test operational skills, but also reinforce the strong spirit of community and teamwork among NSW SES members."
Volunteers with 6-18 months of service were teamed up with more experienced members to participate in six timed exercises, which included storm damage responses, land search and navigation, and first aid scenarios.
Some of the more challenging scenarios involved crossing a minefield to reach a high clearance vehicle, constructing a height safety kit blindfolded and removing hazardous equipment from a quarantined area without touching it.
NSW SES Campbelltown Unit Commander Nathan McClelland said the Campbelltown Challenge is the result of months of planning by many members supporting with logistics, set up, catering and managing stands on the day.
"The event has become a key event in the Campbelltown calendar, bringing together new and experienced members to learn from one another while celebrating the spirit of service that defines the NSW SES," Inspector McClelland said.
