NSW teachers welcome Gonski funding boost

The NSW Teachers Federation welcomes today’s announcement by the NSW Government of increased Gonski funding for public schools in 2016 but is concerned that the Federal Government has not yet committed to funding its share of the NSW Gonski agreement.
Federation President, Maurie Mulheron, said:
“This increased funding to our schools for the third year of implementation of the needs-based Gonski model will provide vital support for individual students in need of additional assistance.
“This is another important step to lifting all schools to a national minimum resource standard over the six years of the NSW Gonski agreement.
“Teachers, principals, support staff, parents and carers - members of public school communities across the state are welcoming this greater investment in our children’s education and the future of our nation.
“The success of Gonski funding is evident in the stories of student achievement coming from schools in all parts of the state.
“To ensure this success continues, it is crucial that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten adopt a bi-partisan approach and pledge the federal funding necessary to ensure the six year NSW Gonski agreement is fully implemented.
“At the state level, the Labor, Liberal and National parties have shown the way by putting the needs of students first and supporting Gonski. Their federal counterparts must now do the same.”
