NSW to Start Cladding Work at Calvary Mater Newcastle

Critical cladding remediation works are set to begin at Calvary Mater Newcastle in March after the NSW Government intervened to expedite building and infrastructure works at the site.

A contractor has now been engaged to replace the non-compliant cladding on the hospital's external façade. In addition to being non-compliant against relevant building code, it has been identified as a contributing factor to some of the water leaks in parts of the hospital. Cladding works are expected to be completed by mid-2027.

Multiple notices of breach have been issued to Novacare, who provide facilities management services.. Progress of cladding works has been repeatedly delayed due to ongoing commercial discussions with Novacare and an acceptable agreement has not been reached.

NSW Health has exercised its rights to have this work undertaken as soon as practicable and is now working directly with a building contractor rather than waiting any longer for Novacare to act.

NSW Health will continue to work closely with the Calvary Mater Newcastle team to coordinate works and minimise disruption to patients, staff and visitors while remediation progresses.

The NSW Government remains committed to ensuring the continued safety, functionality and reliability of Calvary Mater Newcastle and will take all necessary steps to support timely remediation of the site.
