NT CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WALK OFF THE JOB

The enterprise agreement negotiations for NT Correctional Officers have come to an impasse. Officers will be stopping work in Alice Springs and Darwin today.

Urgent negotiations have been held this week with the Commissioner for Public Employment as well as the Minister to circumvent the Correctional Officers stopping work for four hours today.

The negotiations have been productive but there is still no movement from the Government on the claim by union members for agreement on safe staffing levels and an operational agreement.

Erina Early, United Voice NT Branch Secretary, says, "Officers have had enough of lip service. They need assurances that their safety cannot be changed or placed in jeopardy based on cutting costs.

"Officers cannot continue working in an environment which undervalues their safety as well as the safety of the prisoners and the community.

“The Government needs to listens to our members as our demand for safety is a workplace right not something which is a bargaining tool.”

WALK OFF TIMES:

Alice Springs Correction Centre

8:00am to 12:00pm

Darwin Correctional Centre

7:00am to 11:00am
