Numbulwar Evacuates Before Cyclone Narelle Hits

NT Government

Around 500 residents of Numbulwar will be evacuated to Darwin over the coming days as Tropical Cyclone Narelle approaches the Northern Territory coast.

A decision has been made to evacuate the community as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all residents. Preparations are now underway, with evacuation to take place by air.

Incident Controller Kirsten Engels said the evacuation is a critical step in reducing risk to the community.

"To ensure community safety, we will evacuate all Numbulwar residents," Ms Engels said.

"Our number one priority is the preservation of life. By moving people early, we are reducing the risk to the community and to our emergency personnel."

Planning for the evacuation is being coordinated through the Territory Emergency Operations Centre. Arrangements for suitable accommodation in Darwin are well advanced.

The local emergency committee is working closely with the community to support an orderly and efficient evacuation process.

Residents are advised that they are able bring essential items including clothing, personal documents, and any required medications.

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
