As at 31 March 2025:
Of New Zealand's $422.6 billion total investment abroad:
- 70.9 percent was in the United States of America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan
- 6.9 percent was direct investment
- 65.4 percent was portfolio investment
- 4.4 percent was financial derivatives
- 12.6 percent was other investment
- 10.7 percent was reserve assets.
Of the $633.8 billion total foreign investment in New Zealand:
- 58.4 percent was from Australia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Singapore
- 25.2 percent was direct investment
- 54.3 percent was portfolio investment
- 3.7 percent was financial derivatives
- 16.9 percent was other investment.
New Zealand's foreign-currency-denominated external debt was $157.8 billion (95.0 percent of which was hedged).
