As at 31 March 2026
Of New Zealand's $482.7 billion total investment abroad:
- 72.5 percent was in the United States of America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan
- 6.8 percent was direct investment
- 63.7 percent was portfolio investment
- 5.5 percent was financial derivatives
- 13.4 percent was other investment
- 10.6 percent was reserve assets.
Of the $674.4 billion total foreign investment in New Zealand:
- 59.2 percent was from Australia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Singapore
- 25.5 percent was direct investment
- 55.6 percent was portfolio investment
- 4.5 percent was financial derivatives
- 14.4 percent was other investment.
New Zealand's foreign-currency-denominated external debt was $190.5 billion (96.2 percent of which was hedged).
