NZ's Largest Research Database Gets Major Upgrade

Future proofing the country's largest research database will become a focus for Stats NZ as the agency takes further steps to modernise New Zealand's data system.

Today Minister of Statistics Hon Scott Simpson detailed the Government's $57.7 million commitment over four years to modernise the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI). The IDI is New Zealand's largest research database. It combines data from across Government agencies, Stats NZ surveys and non-government organisations allowing researchers to better understand outcomes over time.

The upgrade will be delivered over three years, with improvements rolling out progressively. These changes will include:

  • replacing current systems with faster, more reliable technology that can handle larger volumes of data
  • enabling more users to access data at the same time, with tools that support faster and more complex analysis
  • increasing how often data is updated.

"Demand for IDI data and insights continues to grow as more organisations look to more detailed evidence to inform policy, services, and investment decisions," says Government Statistician and Stats NZ Chief Executive, Colin Lynch.

"The current system was designed as a prototype. This upgrade will provide a more modern, reliable platform to support more complex analysis and wider use by researchers," says Colin.

The modernised IDI will enable more frequent data updates and improved data quality, giving users a clearer and more up-to-date picture of what is happening across communities.

Stats NZ will work with government agencies and non-government organisations to improve data quality and ensure the IDI continues to meet the needs of users.

Strong privacy and security protections will remain in place. Data in the IDI is de-identified, and access is limited to approved researchers working on projects in the public interest.

"Maintaining public trust is critical. People's information is protected through strict safeguards, and data is only used for approved purposes that contribute to research that supports better outcomes for New Zealanders" says Colin.
