International hockey returns to the Northern Territory this week for the first time in almost a decade, as the Finocchiaro CLP Government delivers the 2025 Oceania Cup, putting the NT once again on the global sporting stage.
One of international hockey's most important tournaments, the 3-day event will bring the Australian Hockeyroos and Kookaburras face-to-face with long-time rivals, New Zealand's Black Sticks, in a six-match Trans-Tasman showdown.
Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality, Marie-Clare Boothby, said this major event marked another key moment in the CLP Government's year of action, certainty and security.
"Events like the Oceania Cup bring visitors to the Territory, filling our hotels, restaurants and tourism experiences, and delivering a real boost to our economy while showcasing the Territory as a vibrant destination to audiences right around Australia and overseas," said Ms Boothby.
"The Oceania Cup has long been a pathway to the sport's biggest stages and now offers Top End fans a rare opportunity to experience world-class competition in their own backyard."
Darwin-born, and three-time Olympian, Jeremy Hayward was named co-captain for the 2026 FIH World Cup campaign, which includes the Oceania Cup, and hopes to lead the Kookaburras on Territory soil for the very first time.
Minister for People, Sport and Culture Jinson Charls said when Jeremy Hayward runs out in the green and gold on Territory turf it will be a special moment for the next generation of Territory athletes.
"This is a powerful inspiration for our young athletes, showing them what can be achieved when you start your sporting journey here in the Territory," said Mr Charls.
Hockey NT CEO Jason Butcher said: "The Oceania Cup is more than world-class hockey; it's a moment for the Territory to shine on the international stage.
"Hosting the Hockeyroos, Kookaburras and Vantage New Zealand's Black Sticks here in Darwin gives our community a chance to experience the very best of the sport up close, while showcasing the culture, passion and resilience that make the Top End unique."
Kookaburras co-captain and Territorian Jeremy Hayward said: "Playing at home in front of family and friends will be really special, but just as important is showcasing international hockey to Darwin and the hockey community.
"We always have tough battles with New Zealand, but in Darwin we'll have home advantage. The conditions will suit us, and that's something we're really excited about."
The 2025 Oceania Cup Test Series supported by the Finocchiaro CLP Government through the Northern Territory Major Events Company Event Funding Program, kicks off this week from 4-7 September at the MWT Hockey Centre.
