Officer Charged Following Northern Region Incident

An officer has been charged following a critical incident investigation into a crash on the state's Mid North Coast in 2024.

Shortly before 2.20am on Friday 5 January 2024, the officer – a sergeant attached to a Northern Region command - was responding to a call for assistance in his police vehicle when he allegedly struck a female pedestrian on Middleton Street, South Kempsey.

The 39-year-old woman was taken to Kempsey Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. She was later taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

A crime scene was established and police commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit.

A critical incident team from Manning-Great Lakes Police District investigated the circumstances surrounding police involvement in the crash.

Following the investigation, the officer was issued a court attendance notice for negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm yesterday (Wednesday 31 December 2025).

He is due to face Taree Local Court on Tuesday 10 February 2026.

The officer's employment status is under review.
