Officer Charged in Assault

A police officer has been charged following an investigation into an alleged assault at Surry Hills earlier this year.

Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command established Strike Force Allenvale to investigate the alleged assault of a 19-year-old man on Sunday 13 April 2025.

The man was reportedly punched following a verbal altercation outside a licensed venue on Mary Street, knocking him unconscious.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to St Vincent's hospital, before being discharged.

Investigations revealed that the man was allegedly assaulted by an off-duty police officer.

Following inquiries, a 24-year-old man – a constable attached to a specialist command – was issued a court attendance notice yesterday (Tuesday 12 August 2025), for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

He is due to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 25 September 2025.

The officer's employment status is under review.
