Officer charged over historic assault

A serving police officer has been charged following an arrest at Newtown six years ago.

Earlier this year, an investigation was commenced following allegations a 42-year-old man was assaulted by a then-43-year-old Inspector, during an arrest at Newtown Railway Station on Saturday 15 April 2017.

Following inquiries, a Future Court Attendance Notice was yesterday (Wednesday 29 November 2023), issued for the offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The officer – currently attached to a Southern Region command – is due to appear at Newtown Local Court on Tuesday 30 January 2024.

His employment status is under review.
