Officer Faces Speeding, Drug Driving Charges at Cowan

An off-duty police officer has been charged with traffic offences including drink and drug driving following a vehicle stop in northern Sydney.

About 9am today (Monday 8 September 2025), officers attached to Kuring Gai Traffic and Highway Patrol were conducting stationary speed enforcement on the M1 at Cowan when they stopped a Mitsubishi after it was allegedly detected travelling at 137km/h in a 110km/h zone.

The driver – a 23-year-old man – was subjected to roadside breath and drug tests which both allegedly returned positive results. Subsequent checks revealed the vehicle's registration was expired.

He was arrested and taken to Hornsby Police Station, where he underwent a secondary breath analysis which returned an alleged reading of 0.134, and secondary drug tests which will undergo further analysis.

The man – a constable attached to a South West Metropolitan Region command - was charged with:

  • Motor vehicle exceed speed more than 20km/h,
  • Drive with mid-range PCA and illicit drug,
  • Drive with middle range PCA,
  • Use unregistered motor vehicle on road,
  • Use uninsured motor vehicle on road, and
  • Owner use vehicle on road, motor vehicle tax unpaid.

He was issued a court attendance notice to appear before Hornsby Local Court on Thursday 23 October 2025, and his licence was suspended.
