Officer injured during arrest of man on DV offences - South Coogee

A man will appear in court today after allegedly assaulting police during an arrest, following a domestic-related incident in Sydney's east yesterday.

Just after 4pm (Monday 16 December 2019), officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command were called to a unit on Yamba Place, South Coogee, following reports a woman had been assaulted.

Police have been told a man – who was known to her – entered her unit, assaulted and threatened her, before fleeing the scene.

Officers arrived a short time later and located a man nearby, who immediately ran from police. Following a foot pursuit, the man was apprehended before allegedly resisting, causing himself and the officer to fall down a flight of stairs.

Further attempts were allegedly made to assault the probationary constable, before the man was restrained and arrested.

The 23-year-old man was taken to Waverley Police Station where he was charged with assault police cause actual bodily harm, assault police, resist or hinder police officer, carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, armed with intent to commit indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV), contravene ADVO and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm (DV).

He was refused bail to appear before Waverley Local Court today (Tuesday 17 December 2019).

The probationary constable was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment of a fractured wrist. The woman did not require medical treatment.
