Old South Road set for multi-million refurbishment

Wingecarribee Shire

Wingecarribee Shire Council is finalising details on a multi-million-dollar mid-year make-over of Old South Road.

A total of 9.3 kilometres of the road between Merrigang Street in Bowral and Aylmerton Road in Mittagong is slated for improvement.

“We are fine-tuning final design details for what is a very complex project,” said Council’s Director of Service and Project Delivery, Karin Targa.

“This is a large-scale undertaking designed to improve safety on one of our Shire’s most important roads.”

Ms Targa said given the size of the project the improvement works would likely be undertaken in a staged approach.

“The sheer length of the project necessitates consultation with numerous stakeholders,” she said.

“We are finalising details with utility providers, landowners, environmental authorities, transport providers and government departments to ensure that construction proceeds as smoothly as possible.”

As part of the improvement works Council will reconstruct and widen the road where possible and install safety improvement measures including crash barriers, audio tactile makers and warning signs.

Tender for construction is expected to be released within months with construction anticipated to start soon after.

Geotechnical surveys and preliminary works have already begun onsite.

The project, which will be undertaken in stages, is expected to be completed in 2024.

The Old South Road improvement project is being jointly funded by Wingecarribee Shire Council and the NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program and Fixing Local Roads Program.

Ms Targa said more information would be provided closer to the start of construction.
