One drunk or drug affected driver detected every 10 minutes in Operation Citylink

Police were cracking down on dangerous drivers in Melbourne's north western suburbs overnight, nabbing an alarming number of drivers for traffic offences in Operation Citylink (13 April).

The operation ran from 11.30pm to 4.30am on Citylink near Brunswick Road and police tested approximately 2000 drivers.

27 drivers have been caught allegedly drink driving and nine had their cars impounded over the course of a few hours.

One woman driving in the Brunswick area allegedly returned a positive blood alcohol reading of .22 and tested positive for illicit drugs.

She was also allegedly driving while disqualified and is expected to be charged on summons to appear before the Melbourne Magistrate's court at a later date.

A further three drivers were caught allegedly driving while drug affected.

Police from Fawkner Highway Patrol and Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section also located seven unregistered vehicles and three people driving while suspended or disqualified.

They also issued 60 penalty notices for a range of offences including speeding, mobile phone and seatbelt related matters.

Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Pickering from Fawkner Highway Patrol said police were extremely disappointed with the dangerous and avoidable behaviour seen on the roads.

"We are all sharing the road with people that choose to make these bad decisions."

"There should be no misconception that you won't get caught on a freeway. Be very clear you will get caught, be it a freeway or the side streets," he said.

Drivers are urged to take extra care when travelling on our roads, especially during the Easter school-holiday period when we see an increased number of people going away for the long weekend.
