As part of its commitment to keeping children safe and supporting Territory families, the Finocchiaro CLP Government is expanding access to the Safer Communities for Children program, with resources now available online for the first time.

Funded by the Northern Territory Government and delivered by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) and this Territory program, already used in schools, early childhood services and community organisations, is now available online.

Minister for Children and Families Robyn Cahill said 'helping children feel safe from an early age is key to building safer communities. The creation of an online resource provides broader access, including to parents and carers, assisting them to navigate challenging conversations with children."

"Every child deserves to feel safe, supported and listened to, and that starts with giving them the tools to understand what safety looks like," Ms Cahill said.

"These books are a simple but powerful way to help children express their feelings, build confidence and know who they can turn to for help."

The Northern Territory Government has invested $400,000 to expand and enhance the program which uses bush animal stories to help children aged 3 to 10 understand the danger signs, express their feelings, and identify trusted adults they can turn to for help.

NAPCAN NT Manager Meron Looney said the program gives families practical tools to support children's safety.

"Safer Communities for Children gives adults a simple way to start important conversations with children about safety and wellbeing," Ms Looney said.
