Open day to celebrate 2019 Botanic Gardens Day

The City of Greater Bendigo and Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand (BGANZ) are celebrating 2019 Botanic Gardens Day with a special open day event at the Bendigo Botanic Gardens, White Hills between 11am and 2pm on Sunday May 26.

City of Greater Bendigo Botanic Gardens Team Leader Kirstie Paterson said Botanic Gardens Day is held across Australia and New Zealand on the last Sunday in May each year.

"Over 100 botanic gardens and arboretums are taking part this year, including Bendigo," Ms Paterson said.

"The Bendigo Botanic Gardens open day will feature guided tours of both the Garden for the Future and the Heritage Gardens as well as displays of botanical illustrations and a plant sale.

"The new Garden for the Future has now been open for 12 months and its looking fantastic while the Heritage Gardens have been open for over 160 years and are almost as old as Bendigo itself.

"The open day is an opportunity to appreciate our botanic gardens, experience plant collections that you won't often see in home gardens or just explore and enjoy the lovely surrounds of this wonderful part of Greater Bendigo."

Free activities on the day include:

  • "Discover the Bendigo Botanic Gardens" tours at 11:30 am and 1:00pm.
  • The Aviary will be open from 11am to 2pm and will have a staff member in attendance to answer any questions.
  • The Friends of the Bendigo Botanic Gardens Illustrators will be available from 11am to 2pm in the Samuel Gadd Centre to talk all things Botanical Illustration, and
  • Plants will be available for sale between 11am - 2pm

This event is proudly presented by the City of Greater Bendigo and BGANZ (the chief body representing the interests of botanic gardens in Australia and New Zealand).
