Operation Safe Speed October - Results, SA

With 1052 drivers detected speeding over the three days of Operation Safe Speed October, police are concerned about the number of drivers still choosing to exceed speed limits, according to SA Police.

Inspector Billy Thompson, officer in charge of Traffic Support Branch, says some drivers are making wrong and dangerous choices.

"Driving at 120 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone is no mistake.

"Driving at 166 kilometres an hour in a 110 zone is no mistake.

"Drink driving at 139 kilometres an hour in a 110 zone with three young children in the car is definitely no mistake.

"These are all bad choices that some drivers believe they have the right to make.

"When they make those choices, they put every other person near them on the road in harm’s way.

"With all the education and information about safe driving speeds and the harm caused by driving at even small increments over the limit, it is worrying that a small number of drivers continue to ignore the road rules.

"Unfortunately for the rest of us, that small number of selfish drivers can do a lot of harm to innocent people.

"Police will continue to run targeted operations to crack down on dangerous, speeding, drink/drug or distracted driving. We will continue to push through road safety messages and we will continue to enforce the law.

"However, every driver knows the responsibility to drive safely and lawfully starts and ends with them, every time they start the engine.

"It’s time every driver made the choice to take their responsibility seriously."
