Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive Results

Police have found multiple drivers with alcohol and drugs in their system during Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive over the weekend.

Police also found 33 drink drivers, including a 30-year-old male of no fixed address who was observed trying to avoid the Port Road driver testing site by driving up onto the tram tracks whilst his lights were turned off. He disobeyed police directions and was arrested by police on foot. He was taken to the City Watch House where he was also found to be driving under the influence and the holder of an expired driver's licence. He returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.329 (almost six times over the legal limit) and was refused bail. He will appear in court today.

Additionally, 21 vehicles were impounded and 20 drivers were issued with an immediate loss of licence notice.

Superintendent Bob Gray, the Officer in Charge of the Traffic Services Branch, is appalled at the number of drink and drug drivers found during the Operation.

"These readings are unacceptable, and there's absolutely no excuse for this behaviour," he said.

"No individual can justify getting behind the wheel while drunk or on drugs, there's no way someone can make sense of that.

"If you take drugs and/or drink drive, you need to accept that your actions are selfish, and you're endangering not only your life, but the lives of others.
