Sunshine Coast police have launched a targeted operation aimed at the continued enhancement of safety on public transport networks across the district.
Operation Yankee Course is run in partnership with the Department of Transport to maintain public safety and focus on the prevention of any assaults, property crime and other anti-social behaviour.
Local officers have been patrolling bus stations in Caloundra, Maroochydore and Kawana scanning for weapons in line with Jacks Law, addressing any instances of antisocial behaviour, and engaging directly with the community through face-to-face interactions.
Police have also been working closely with Senior Network Officers from the Department of Transport to identify and address safety concerns.
More bus and train stations across the district are expected to join the operation soon.
Officer in Charge of Maroochydore Station Senior Sergeant Jacob Flaherty said the operation has already been highly successful around Maroochydore.
"We've seen a significant reduction in anti-social behaviour and an increase in public confidence in the safety of our transport networks."
Senior Sergeant Flaherty also said public transport is an essential service and passengers should expect to see police engaging with the community.
"Everyone has the right to feel safe while travelling," he said.
"By addressing safety concerns and taking proactive measures, we're ensuring that public transport remains a reliable and secure option for all residents and visitors."
Operation Yankee Course has been a rolling operation in southeast Queensland since 2023.
