Orana LAC thanks community for support and info during "Dob in a Dealer" campaign, NSW

Police and Crime Stoppers have thanked people who live in Dubbo and the surrounding areas for their support and information during the recent “Dob in a Dealer” campaign, NSW Police say.

The Commonwealth-funded campaign is currently being conducted in states and territories across Australia.

While members of the public are encouraged to report any prohibited-drug activity via Crime Stoppers, the focus of this campaign is “ice” (crystal methylamphetamine).

“Dob in a Dealer” was conducted in Orana Local Area Command (LAC) between Monday 21 March 2016 and Sunday 3 April 2016.

Police and Crime Stoppers conducted intensive community-engagement activities at locations across the command.

During the two weeks of the campaign, Crime Stoppers received 31 community information reports relating to possible drug activity within the Dubbo area. This represented a 63-per-cent increase on the two weeks prior to the campaign.

Of these reports, 10 related specifically to amphetamines. (The drug “ice” falls within this drug category.) This was a 43-per-cent increase on the previous fortnight.

“We would like to thank the community for getting behind the ‘Dob in a Dealer’ campaign,” Orana Local Area Commander, Superintendent David Simmons, said.

“It is clear from the response of local residents they have had enough of the harm caused by illicit drugs in this area, especially ‘ice’,” he said.

“We are especially thankful to local residents for the information they provided to us. We’re now analysing the reports and determining the best courses of action,” he said.

Crime Stoppers NSW CEO, Peter Price, said Orana-district residents can still report information confidentially and anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppers.com.au.

“While the campaign has ended in this area, the issue of illegal drugs has not – and we urge the community to continue reporting drug-dealing or drug-manufacturing activity to Crime Stoppers,” Mr Price said.

“Making a report to Crime Stoppers is completely confidential. You will never be identified or called up for a court case, but every piece of information you provide can help solve crimes and reduce drug supply,” he said.

In NSW, the “Dob in a Dealer” campaign is being held in 21 metropolitan, suburban and regional local area commands over a six-month period between March and September 2016.

The campaign runs in each command for two weeks in each location.
