From 21 May to 24 June 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, with the support of the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe, organized six roundtable discussions on "The Contribution of Public Councils to Ensuring Public Order and Enhancing Police-Community Co-operation" in Bokhtar, Dushanbe, Gharm, Khorog, Khujand and Kulob.
The roundtables were held as part of the implementation of the annual Joint Plan of Actions between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe. They brought together a total of 285 participants (47 women and 238 men), including representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, members of regional, city and district Public Councils under the Ministry and its departments and divisions, representatives of civil society and the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe.
In his remarks, Colonel Tolehzoda Azam Tolib, National Co-ordinator for Police Reform at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, highlighted the role of Public Councils in supporting police reform, strengthening co-operation between law enforcement agencies and society, and engaging citizens in maintaining public safety.
Representatives of the Public Councils under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and regional departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Sughd, Khatlon and Rasht shared their experience of co-operation between law enforcement agencies and communities, including citizens' role in preventing crime and offences, raising legal awareness among the population and strengthening public trust in the police.
During the roundtables, participants discussed ways to strengthen police-community co-operation, engage citizens in maintaining public order, prevent crime among adolescents and young people, and further develop the activities of Public Councils. The discussions also provided an opportunity to exchange views on further co-operation between law enforcement agencies and civil society.
At the conclusion of the roundtables, several members of the Public Councils under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and its regional departments received certificates of appreciation and commemorative gifts in recognition of their contribution to strengthening police-community co-operation, supporting the police reform process and actively participating in the work of the Public Councils.
