The University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka is back among the top 200 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings.
It was today announced Otago has placed 197th equal in the 2026 edition of the rankings, having slipped just outside the top 200 over the previous three years.

Otago also retains its position as the second-highest ranked university in New Zealand.
Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson says this reiterates Otago's reputation as a world-class university.
"I want to acknowledge the hard work of our staff that sits behind this result, who day in day out are producing world class research and providing world class teaching."
Otago has risen 17 places from last year, marking its best performance since it was ranked 194th in 2022. Part of this improvement is due to an increase in its Academic Reputation and Citations Per Faculty scores.
"These gains are hard won through the efforts of our kaimahi and tauira. We will look to build on these results into the future as we strive for excellence in all that we do."
It follows success earlier in the year when Otago's sports-related subjects were ranked 11th in the world in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the top subject ranking for a New Zealand university.
The QS World University Rankings is the most comprehensive ranking of its kind with more than 1500 institutions participating, highlighting the best institutions around the world.
They incorporate datapoints from more than 16 million academic papers as well as the views of more than 150,000 academics and 100,000 employers.
Each of the QS rankings are compiled using a core methodology that employs a range of vital factors including student experience, university partnerships, research activity and faculty qualifications.
