Pair charged and more than $400,000 seized, NSW

A man and woman have been charged and police have seized more than $400,000 as part of ongoing investigations into money laundering, NSW Police say.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad and the NSW Crime Commission established Strike Force Aldred to identify and investigate large-scale money laundering in NSW.

As part of their inquiries, strike force detectives stopped a Toyota Corolla on Glassop Street, Yagoona, just after 4.30pm on Tuesday (17 October 2017).

Officers spoke with a female driver, who had just dropped off a male passenger, before conducting a search of the car, where they located $200,000 cash.

During the search, the male passenger approached the vehicle, before running in the opposite direction.

Police gave chase and caught up with the man at the intersection of William Street, where he allegedly resisted the officers before being arrested.

During a search of the man’s backpack, investigators located $220,000 cash.

The cash was seized and the pair was taken to Bankstown Police Station.

The 30-year-old man, who is a Canadian tourist, was charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime and resist officer in execution of duty.

He was refused bail and appeared at Bankstown Local Court, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Wednesday 25 October 2017.

The 20-year-old woman was charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime.

She was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday 8 November 2017.

Following further inquiries, strike force detectives executed a search warrant at accommodation at Neutral Bay about 2.15pm yesterday, where they seized electronic storage devices, SIM cards, documentation, and passports.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to organised criminal activity, including money laundering to call Crime Stoppers.
