Cairns is turning 150 this year and the whole community is being invited to bring back one of our city's most iconic traditions – the "Fun in the Sun" parade – for a special one-off celebration.
The city's biggest annual party, Cairns Festival, was affectionally know as Fun in the Sun from 1963 until the early 1990s.
As part of the 150-year celebrations, the community is being encouraged to recreate the spirit of Cairns' early festival days, while celebrating everything that makes our city vibrant today.
Get involved
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden this was a one-off opportunity and urged everyone to get involved to make it the biggest and brightest parade Cairns has ever seen.
"It's no secret that I love Cairns Festival – it represents everything that is great about our city," Cr Eden said.
"Incorporating the magic of Fun of the Sun into the Cairns Celebrates 150 Years Program is a chance to honour the businesses, communities and milestones that have built the city of Cairns, while also shining a light on the bright future ahead.
"Think tropical colour, coastal vibes, sun-soaked nostalgia and bold Cairns energy – bright, joyful and uniquely us.
"We're inviting everyone to take part – community groups, schools, cultural organisations, artists, sporting clubs, businesses, neighbourhood crews and anyone with creative spirit.
"Create a float. March with your team. Dance, drum, perform or simply bring your sunny flair.
"Whether you are inspired by vintage Cairns memories or imaginative visions of our future, your creativity will help bring this milestone parade to life in front of more than 30,000 spectators."
