Parkhurst State School will celebrate 125 years of education this Saturday, opening the gates for current and past students, staff, families and the wider community to celebrate and showcase the transformation from a small rural school to a growing regional educator.

Rockhampton Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Communities Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said Council was proud to support the Parents and Citizens Association with $2,000 from the Community Assistance Program for the anniversary celebrations.

"We wish the Parkhurst State School a successful event this Saturday, which we understand will bring past students and staff together, not only from throughout Central Queensland but from further afield including north Queensland and New South Wales," Cr Wickerson said.

"As these people come together to celebrate the Parkhurst community through the years, we know they will also experience the dynamic growth of our regional city and enjoy all that Rockhampton now has to offer — from quality accommodation and modern hospitality venues to unique local tourism experiences."

Divisional Councillor Shane Latcham said it was evident that Parkhurst pride remained today, even as the school has grown from 36 students in 1900, 230 students in 2000, to 430 students today.

"The country mentality of community and connection remains at Parkhurst, and I know there are many past students and staff who are extremely proud to have been alumni of this wonderful school," Cr Latcham said.

"The growth of Parkhurst State School is a representation of the expansion of the Parkhurst community, where growth brings new opportunities and connections for families, local businesses and the wider community."

Parkhurst State School Teacher and 125th Anniversary Chairperson Ms Alison Worthington said the school began as a small rural school and continues to be student focused today, with 18 classes, 430 student and over 50 staff.

"We take pride in being a school that embraces the Parkhurst community," Ms Worthington said.

"In 1940 in World War II there were approximately 130 pupils with 90 of those coming from St George's 'on the hill'.

"The school children can remember the day General McArthur came to address the troops at St George's – the entire hillside was covered with soldiers 'as far as you could see'.

"In 2000, the school turned 100 and a time capsule was created along with a centenary garden.

"On Saturday there will items on display from the 2000 capsule and other historical memorabilia, with items also on display that will be placed into the 125th year time capsule."

The 125th celebration event will be held on Saturday 2 August at Parkhurst State School, 11 Mason Avenue, Parkhurst.

It will include registration for the roll call of past students and staff from 10am, an official ceremony commencing at 11am and 125th Anniversary Celebration Fair from 12pm to 4pm, with market stalls, food, coffee, petting zoo, face painting and rides.
