The City of Parramatta will commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific with a free online experience that explores the City's unique connections to the momentous day.
Victory in the Pacific Day marks the end of World War II, following Japan's surrender on 15 August 1945. The Victory in the Pacific 75th Anniversary Online Experience presents a collection of local Parramatta stories, historical documents, images and an e-publication to celebrate the occasion.
"There were so many incredible stories of bravery, resilience and the unwavering Australian spirit to emerge from World War II and we want to ensure those stories are heard, so our local heroes, and the lessons of the past, are never forgotten," City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.
"Through this online exhibition, I hope that Parramatta locals and others across the country are able to gain a better understanding of the events that took place during World War II and the sacrifices so many Australians made in an effort to serve and protect our country."
In addition to the carefully curated content produced by archivists and researchers at the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre, the Victory in the Pacific 75th Anniversary Online Experience also features photos and stories of significant historical items from the heritage-listed New South Wales Lancers' Memorial Museum. The items include historical weapons, maps, flags, an Operation Order, and other wartime memorabilia.
The ACE Matilda tank - the first tank off the landing craft on 1 July 1945 at Australia's largest ever armoured assault at Balikpapan on the island of Borneo - is also featured as part of the exhibit. ACE has been restored to full mobility and is now on permanent display at the Lancer Barracks.
"It is important that we continue to observe and learn about the key events in our history, and virtual experiences, such as this one, are a great way to do this. I encourage everyone to jump online and get involved," said Cr Dwyer.
