Parrots Fly Home For Festive Season

Tasmanian Government

Orange-bellied Parrots (OBP) have continued to return home to Melaleuca in strong numbers this year.

Minister for Environment, Madeleine Ogilvie, said it was great to see 86 birds return.

"This year's returns include 51 males and 35 females. There were 66 wild born, and 20 captive-bred birds were released as juveniles in previous seasons," Minister Ogilvie said.

"Another year of promising return numbers demonstrates the hard work of our dedicated volunteers and staff as part of the successful OBP Tasmanian Program.

"The program undertakes a range of activities to support birds in both captive and wild environments, as part of coordinated efforts to conserve this iconic species."

While the numbers were not as high as last year's recent record of 91, this is the second highest number recorded since reliable annual monitoring began.

The first fledglings of the season have started to arrive at the Five Mile Beach Wildlife Facility.

Some of the young born at Five Mile Beach this season will be released at Melaleuca in late summer to supplement the wild population.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to the OBP program in Tasmania, with $2.5 million invested into developing the Five Mile Beach captive breeding facility.

An additional $1.3 million was also committed towards tracking the parrots on their migration and upgrading the Five Mile Beach facility.

The Orange-belled Parrot (OBP) Tracking Project is being led by NRE Tas, in collaboration with Zoos Victoria.

The 2025 tracking project involved 39 OBPs being fitted with lightweight very high frequency transmitters ahead of their northern migration to the mainland.

The report will be released in the new year.
