Party Of Five Safe After Boating Incident

Five people, including a nine-year-old boy, were rescued from Port Esperance Bay, at Dover, on Sunday night after their dinghy upturned about 200m from shore.

The party of five spent an anxious 20 minutes in the bay after their small boat was hit by a bow wave and they were tossed into the water, about 7.25pm.

All people on board the dinghy were wearing life jackets and while they were wet, cold and shaken up, there were no serious injuries.

The group raised the alarm by setting off distress flares and issuing a Mayday call on marine radio.

Boat operators nearby, including Tassal workers, responded quickly and were able to locate the people and get them safely back to shore by about 7.50pm.

Once on dry land, officers from Tasmania Police and Ambulance Tasmania were able to provide further assistance, including shelter in warm vehicles.

The group of three men, a woman and a child had earlier enjoyed a boating day trip in the state's south on a larger vessel, and were being ferried back to shore in the dinghy when they got into trouble.
