A critical incident investigation is underway after a pursuit and crash in Sydney's north west this morning.
Just after 5am today (Friday 25 July 2025), officers attached to Chifley Police District sighted a red Mazda hatchback parked on Great Western Highway, Bowenfels.
As police approached the vehicle, the driver drove away from police.
After losing sight of the vehicle, officers conducted extensive patrols of the area.
About 7am, the vehicle was sighted on Werriway Street, South Littleton, before it allegedly rammed a police vehicle and drove at a police officer.
There were no reports of injuries.
The vehicle continued to the Bells Line of Road where a pursuit was initiated by officers attached to Chifley Highway Patrol before it was terminated due to the dangerous manner of driving.
The vehicle travelled towards Faulconbridge where a second pursuit was initiated and again terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
With the assistance of Polair, the vehicle was tracked to the Penrith area where road spikes were successfully deployed on Castlereagh and Cranebrook Road, Penrith.
The vehicle continued along Castlereagh Road before colliding with a Toyota SUV, a Sprinter van and a Hyundai.
The driver of the Mazda – a 33-year-old man – was ejected from the vehicle before being arrested a short distance away.
He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious head injuries before being taken to Westmead hospital in a critical condition.
The driver of the SUV – 35-year-old man – sustained minor hand injuries whilst the other drivers were uninjured.
They were all assessed at the scene by paramedics.
Subsequent checks indicate the man was wanted on two outstanding warrants for domestic violence related offences.
A crime scene has been established and a critical investigation team from Ryde Police Area Command commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
