They may have been designed as different festivals but this year in Kempsey, Youth Week and the Macleay Seniors Festival came together in beautiful ways.

A special outcome driven by hosting both festivals simultaneously this year was seeing young people and seniors connect on new levels and experience things together.

We saw people of all ages gather to watch acoustic sets in the library, tackle the giant obstacle course at Riverside Park and attend other events such as ten-pin bowling in South West Rocks.

A highlight that shed a light on the link that was strengthened between our young people and seniors was the Intergenerational Storytime hosted at the Crescent Head Public School. At this event, we saw grandparents, parents and children of many ages come together to read books, enjoy each other's company and reflect.

"It was just wonderful to witness people of all ages connecting so deeply through books and conversation," said Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell.

She also wanted to thank the organisations who made the events during these past three weeks happen.

"It was especially generous of all of the businesses and community groups to take time out of their busy schedules to host such great activities for the seniors and young people in our community. We really do live in a special place," Mayor Campbell said.

We appreciate everyone's participation in both festivals in 2021 and are looking forward to next year already.

Would you like to see something special in the program for next year's events or are you interested in hosting an event yourself? Excellent. Keep your eyes peeled early next year as we begin working with the community to develop the next set of programs via Your Say Macleay.
