Pharmacies Aid Queenslanders During Asthma Week

National Asthma Week in Australia (1-7 September) serves as an important reminder for Queenslanders to take proactive steps to manage their asthma, with community pharmacies playing an increasingly important role in supporting patients with long-term respiratory conditions.

This year's Asthma Week focuses particularly on asthma's impact on women in Australia. According to Asthma Australia, one in five Australian women are currently living with asthma, and women are twice as likely as men to die from the condition.

Chris Owen, President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland, said that community pharmacies in Queensland are offering more services to asthma patients in more locations.

"Asthma is a common long-term condition that affects the airways and can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. Triggers vary from person to person; while there is no cure for asthma, it can be effectively managed."

"With regular monitoring, appropriate treatment and early intervention, people with asthma can live full and active lives," Mr Owen said.

"Community pharmacists are playing a critical role in helping Queensland patients to manage chronic conditions like asthma," said Mr Owen.

Participating community pharmacies can help eligible patients with asthma management, including:

  • supporting asthma action plans and ongoing management,
  • reviewing medications to ensure they are being used effectively,
  • providing education on symptom management and triggers,
  • supporting correct inhaler technique.

"Community pharmacies are located in almost every town and suburb across Queensland, making it easier for patients to access advice, support and treatment when they need it," Mr Owen said.
