Plan Ahead: April Track Closures For Major Rail Works

  • South East Queensland locals and visitors are advised to plan their journeys in advance ahead of significant track closures across the train network between 3 and 26 April.
  • These track closures will allow critical works on multiple major projects to be undertaken safely and efficiently in the rail corridor, as we work to build a better rail network.
  • Most train lines will be impacted at some stage during the period and replacement buses will keep customers moving.
  • South East Queensland train customers travelling this April are urged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time with major track closures taking place from Friday 3 April to Sunday 26 April.
These works are all part of a once-in-a-generation transformation to South East Queensland's rail network to support our growing population. These track closures are required for major project works including:
• Cross River Rail supporting works
• Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Stage 1
• Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail
• Loganlea Station Relocation
• Queensland Train Manufacturing Program
• European Train Control System (ETCS)
• General track maintenance.
From Friday, 3 April to Saturday, 11 April, there will be major track closures affecting the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Doomben, Shorncliffe, Airport, Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines.
From 12 April to 26 April, track closures will continue on the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines only.
Buses will replace trains on affected lines during this whole period.
Additional buses will be available, including express and all-stops rail buses, as well as regular bus services to help customers complete their journeys. For certain trips, regular bus services might be a more convenient option for travelling to and from the city.
Changes to each line may vary during the track closure, and we urge customers to review their transport options, plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
NRL and AFL fans attending games during the track closures are urged to plan ahead and allow additional travel time. These include the Titans-Broncos game at Cbus Super Stadium on April 4 and Broncos-Cowboys game at Suncorp Stadium on April 10. There will be plenty of buses to help customers get where they need to go.
Acting Head of Translink Dean Helm said the works were part of a wider transformation of South East Queensland's rail network, that will build a better network for now and into the future.
"These track closures allow important work to be undertaken on a number of projects that are critical to building a better rail network," Mr Helm said.
"If you are travelling during this period, I encourage you to plan ahead, consider your transport options, and allow plenty of travel time.
"We understand extended track closures can be an inconvenience to customers. This is why we have coordinated work across multiple projects to be undertaken at the same time to help minimise the period of the disruption.
"While there is never a good time for track closures, conducting this work over the school holiday period reduces the impact as less customers travel on the network at this time.
"We will ensure plenty of rail replacement bus services are available providing connections to help customers complete their journeys."
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said crews would be out in force alongside other projects to make the most of the opportunity to work safely and efficiently in the rail corridor without trains running.
"Critical works will be carried out across the network, including removal and installation of track and overhead line equipment around the Mayne Yard stabling facility, platform demolition at Moorooka station, and testing and commissioning at the new Hope Island station on the Gold Coast," Mr Newton said.
"These works are being carried out as part of the Delivery Authority's wider scope beyond the new underground tunnels and stations and are just one part of the broader transformation to build a better rail network, alongside projects like The Wave on the Sunshine Coast and Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail."
