Plan ahead to enjoy a safe Australia Day, SA

Whether you’re going to celebrate Australia Day 2017 in the city, by the sea or at Adelaide Oval, plan ahead to ensure a safe and memorable day, according to SA Police.

Various community celebrations, concerts and ceremonies are planned for Adelaide’s beaches and the heart of the city, including the return of One Day International cricket to Adelaide Oval as Australia hosts Pakistan.

Events in Elder Park, Glenelg, Semaphore and regional centres are expected to draw large crowds. The public can count on a highly visible and proactive police presence in and around these events.

Police will pay particular attention to crowd and road safety, assisting with traffic flow and detecting dangerous drivers.

If you do plan on drinking, do so in moderation and don’t get behind the wheel. Instead, leave your car at home and arrange alternative transportation.

In addition to existing Dry Zones, a number of events have special Dry Zone provisions or other provisions which police will be enforcing. Before setting off, double-check your event’s specific conditions via your local council website.

The state’s largest celebration in Elder Park is this year expected to attract more than 40,000 people.

Police will keep a watchful eye on crowd behaviour, cracking down quickly on aggressive, antisocial patrons to ensure the safety and enjoyment of families attending.

Foot patrols will be deployed in key areas across SA, supported by Mounted Operations Unit, Transit Police, bicycle patrols and Licensing Enforcement Branch officers, as well as Water Operations members.
