Plan Outlines Pathway To Growth For Red Meat Sector

Tasmanian Government

Efforts to drive growth in Tasmania's red meat sector have been boosted with the launch of the 2025 Tasmanian Red Meat Industry Strategic Plan.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jane Howlett, said the Tasmanian Government is committed to supporting the red meat industry with the delivery of the plan, developed by TasFarmers.

"Tasmania's red meat industry has witnessed consistent growth, thanks to favourable conditions, irrigation access, and strong market demand, leading to increased farm gate value over the past eight years," Minister Howlett said.

"This plan includes recommendations to enhance productivity and animal health as well as identify market opportunities for our quality beef and lamb, produce that is the envy of the World.

"Importantly, the plan has been developed with industry for industry, and I commend TasFarmers on a job well-done."

In 2023, the Tasmanian Government provided $60,000 to TasFarmers through the Strategic Industry Partnership Program to finalise the development of the Red Meat Industry Strategic Plan.

The Plan is important to establishing opportunities for growth and identify challenges that need to be overcome such as rising transport costs and workforce shortages.

Minister Howlett said the Tasmanian Government is supporting farmers to innovate and grow through the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.

"This Government has a bold target to grow the farm gate value of Tasmanian agriculture to $10 billion dollars a year by 2050," Minister Howlett said.

"Since announcing the AgriVision target in 2015-16, the farm gate value has increased from $1.48 billion dollars to $2.46 billion dollars in 2023.

"The red meat sector has been a significant contributor to the result, with a farmgate value of $598.3 million at last count.

"Our ongoing Joint Venture Agreement with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture and our recent investment in the Zero Net Emissions for Agriculture Cooperative Research Centre are but two other examples of how the Government is supporting the red meat sector.

"As the Strategic Plan demonstrates, ongoing partnerships and collaboration are the key for the red meat value chain in Tasmania to become more competitive."
