Planning Reform Delays Hit Families, Workers, Biz

Property Council NSW Executive Director Anita Hugo said every day of delay makes it harder for families and essential workers to find an affordable place to live, and more difficult for businesses to have the certainty they need to invest and create jobs.

"NSW is already falling behind its housing targets, and stalling this Bill means keeping the brakes on new homes and the infrastructure our communities urgently need," Ms Hugo said.

"These reforms are about cutting duplication, speeding up approvals and getting more homes built faster, including for teachers, nurses, and police officers who are being priced out of their own communities," she said.

The delay comes just a week after fresh ABS data showed NSW delivered just 56% of its annual 75,000-home target to June, with quarterly completions falling to 9,638 and commencements down 13% in the last quarter.

"The numbers tell the story. We need a steadier approvals pipeline feeding through to commencements and completions. This Bill is designed to do exactly that," Ms Hugo said.

Ms Hugo said industry, councils and community housing providers were ready to partner with government, but uncertainty pushes projects to the sidelines and drives up costs.

"Every week of drift means finance windows close and feasibility gets harder. Families will feel that delay in longer waits and higher rents," Ms Hugo said.

"This is not about politics, it's about people. The longer we wait, the more families will struggle to find a home they can afford, and the more pressure builds on the housing system," she said.
