Play helps young people to choose life

Parent Guides

The creators of a play that encourages parents to discuss suicide with their children hope it will help prevent young people from taking their own lives.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among Australians aged 15-44 (source: AIHW). Jess Chooses Life is a 35-minute play that addresses youth suicide in the online era and how young people can reach breaking point without their parents realising.

Its developers argue that families should discuss mental health in a way that educates and potentially prevents self-harm. So far, audiences have agreed that the play is facilitating important discussion (see following page).

Teenagers, young adults and parents are encouraged to attend Jess Chooses Life together or alone and join a conversation with experts afterwards.
