Plumpton Road Upgrade Preliminary Works Progress

The next phase of preparation works for the $66 million project for the duplication of Plumpton Road and intersection upgrades is set to get underway next week, weather permitting.

These works will include site establishment along the project corridor, sediment and erosion controls, and vegetation removal ahead of sewer, water main and service relocation works.

Further vegetation removal works will occur progressively as part of the site preparation phase and are expected to take several days to complete, subject to weather and site conditions.

Installation of sewer and water infrastructure will follow shortly after completion of these works.

Executive Manager - Major Projects Darryl Woods said the vegetation removal is required to allow for the construction of critical infrastructure – the installation of a new sewer and water main to service the Southern Growth Area.

"The vegetation removal works will predominately occur on the eastern side of Plumpton Road between Lansdowne Avenue and Nelson Drive," Mr Woods said.

"Council held off commencing Stage 2 vegetation removal until detailed design was confirmed for the new sewer and water lines to ensure we would be removing the least number of trees possible. The sewer and water component of the overall project design is now at 90 per cent and work can commence.

"We have taken a highly considered and proactive approach to the design of the new road and location of the associated to minimise the impacts of the Plumpton Road upgrade on the native flora and fauna in the area.

"In December last year, we installed over 120 nest boxes along the project corridor, nearby reserves and on private land in preparation for the staged vegetation removals, which began in January this year.

"A qualified ecologist has been working with us, the contractor, and engineers in inspecting and assessing the trees identified for these works and will also be on hand to supervise the upcoming removals when they get underway."

NEST BOX INSTALLATION: In December 2025, over 120 nest boxes were installed along the project corridor in preparation for the staged vegetation removals.

Council advises Plumpton Road users there may be some temporary changes to traffic conditions during the various works within the project corridor.

Due to activities taking place in proximity to the road, traffic management will be in place if lane disruptions are required for safety reasons.

The community is also advised temporary fencing will be erected in the reserve area between Lansdowne Avenue and Nelson Drive prior to trenching and pipe installation occurring in early April.

"Access to this section of the pedestrian-cycle path will be closed to the public and will not be available for the duration of works," Mr Woods said. "Diversions will be in place to the Lake Albert pathways.

"While we understand this may cause some inconvenience to regular path users and nearby residents, it's essential to maintain safe separation for the public and a safe work environment for the contractors.

Following the award of the design and construction contract in late October 2025, the overall detailed design has progressed and is due for completion in late April/early May 2026.

Road pavement construction is not expected to commence until June/July. Notifications will be provided to advise the community where and when specific activities are planned.

The NSW Government has invested $49.57 million in the project through the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund Round 3, alongside a $16.52 million contribution from Wagga Wagga City Council.
