Police appeal after serious assault, man hospitalised in Newcastle

Police are appealing for public assistance after a man suffered a fractured skull following an assault in Newcastle over the weekend, NSW Police say.

About 11.40pm on Saturday (21 April 2018), a man was crossing Union Lane, when he was approached by a white Holden Commodore sedan.

After a brief verbal altercation between the man and the occupants of the vehicle, a man alighted from the Holden and assaulted the pedestrian.

The 20-year-old man was punched in the face, causing him to fall backwards and loose consciousness.

The man from the Holden then produced a bottle and threatened members of the public who attempted to intervene.

Officers from Newcastle City Police Area Command were patrolling in the area when they saw the unconscious man lying on the footpath.

As police approached, the assaliant left the area. He was last seen in Hunter Street.

Officers stopped the Holden further down Union Lane and spoke with the female driver and another male passenger.

The pair were detained by police, but later released.

The 20-year-old man was taken to John Hunter Hospital with a fractured skull. He remains in a serious condition.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
